All humans interact with others because humans are social animals. However, it is not easy to socialize with others because everyone is different. They have different values, aspects, personalities, and appearances. Therefore, there are some conflicts and arguments. Oftentimes, majority rules minority so some people are treated unfairly. This is very significant to the novel The Chrysalids and our modern society. So, the novel, The Chrysalids suggests that humanity does not accept or respect humans who are different from the norm.
Main points:
The majority of modern society and people in Waknuk think that the true image of human being is themself.
The deviations are not respected because they are considered as blasphemies that are from devils.
Body Paragraphs:
1st: The people in Waknuk want to be the true images of God so they can rule people.
2nd: The Waknuk people are scared of some deviations overpowering them because they have more talents.
3rd: Even though some people of Waknuk might want to accept some differences, they are not allowed and they cannot because of pressures from the others.

People tend to follow and copy others because they do not want to appear strange or weird in someone else's perspective. As a result of this conformity, a group of people end up wearing the same clothes, having similar body figures, and have similar hair styles. In the novel, The Chrysalids, there is a quote about their standards of norms: "It was this long line of tongues that had given us the name Labrador, for it was unmentioned in either the Bible or Repentances, and they may have been right about the cold, although there were only two cold months in the year now-Tribulation could account for that, it could account for almost anything..."-(pg.39) This quote suggests that the Bible or Repentances are not always right because as time changes, some aspects change as well. The people in Waknuk want to be the true images of God so they can rule people with their powers. Also, people would respect them even though the rulers are being selfish and unfair. Since they are in power, they are able to have people as slaves, murder, and order people to do some goods for them. For example, Sophie is tortured and is about to get murdered because she has extra toes even though she is still a human being just like the others in Waknuk. The "norms" in Waknuk convince her that she is a blasphemy, which are people from the devil, so she cannot stay with them. Since the "norms" are based just on the Bible and Repentances, they cannot prove whom the deviations are. Moreover, this problem is noticeable to our modern society as well. For instance, some people feel shameful about their differences between themselves and the others and are less confident about themselves. This problem is also affected by media and it influences us that this is the true-image and says that this is our standard. However, since everyone has equal rights, there should be no discriminations.
Second Body Paragraph If other people have more talents or skills than you, you may get jealous or envious. This applies to most people, including the people in Waknuk. " ...When people are different, ordinary people are afraid of them. And once they get afraid they become cruel and want to hurt people who are different-"(pg.144) They are scared of some deviations being harmful to them with their talents and skills and fear that they can overpower them. Since they do not want to lose their powers of ordering people around, they have to eliminate those that are different and which cause harm to them. Therefore, they become cruel and hurt them. This problem is also very significant in our modern society. The majority of people may give disadvantages to the humans who are different from the norm, "deviations". These disadvantages can be discriminations, insults, and disrespectful manners. This kind of behaviour is unacceptable, despite the fact that people are emotional. Although they may not mean to do something, they still have to take responsibilities for their actions. Therefore, no one should be overly jealous and cause some actions that they will regret but try to create an united environment.

Alhough some people of Waknuk may want to accept some differences, the pressure from others prevent them from understanding these "deviations." This force or compression has been delivered with a remarkable impact to the people in Waknuk. This pressure caused them to ignore these deviations that are different from the norms that are the standards of Waknuk, therefore they have to either hide the fact that they are blasphemies or they are tortured and murdered. Some people feel sympathy toward them, like Sophie's mom or Aunt Harriet. "If anyone were to find out, they'd-they'd be terribly unkind to her... Because she has six toes?... Yes. That's why nobody but us must ever know. It must be a secret between us."(pg. 12-13) This quote explains the issues of the pressure in Waknuk. If people would find out that Sophie is a mutant, they would murder her. However, her mother and David loves Sophie and does not want her to die.This concept indicates that even though some people, like Sophie's mom and David, would like to accept the difference and drive away from the pressure, they could not do it. This also relates to our modern society. For example. peer pressure is a huge problem in our modern society. The peer pressure occurs in lots of places, like schools, parties, malls, and many more. This leads to the conformity; fitting ourselves in. For our individualities and uniqueness, conformity or peer pressure should not occur.
Conclusion
In many ways, there are some problems with differences between humans. However, no one should be discriminating those that are different from them but try to accept differences and be united. In the novel, The Chrysalids, the majority people of Waknuk try to overpower those people called "deviations" for their own goods. They want to have their powers so they can be benefited. Also, the pressure from them creates unfairness to the people in Waknuk. The blasphemies are discriminated and they almost do not have rights about themselves. Moreover, in our modern society, people are discriminated by their genders, ages, appearances, religions, and races. Since this discrimination is unreasonable, humans should respect the differences of others.
